Interpreting Estimated Environmental Kuznets Curves for Greenhouse Gases

چکیده

This paper examines the question of how to interpret a relationship between income and carbon emissions in a country (the environmental Kuznets curve – EKC -for carbon). A very simple and graphical structural model of an EKC is developed and the problems of applying the concept to carbon are discussed. A major issue is the weak link between demand to avoid damage from climate change and regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions at the country level. The paper goes on to interpret three recent papers in this Journal in the context of this structural model. 1 Email: [email protected]. This paper is an expansion of comments at a conference at the World Resources Institute in September 2005, on papers published in a special issue (March 2005) of the Journal of Environment and Development. I am grateful to three anonymous referees for valuable comments on an earlier version of this paper.

رابطه رشد اقتصادی و آلودگی زیست‌محیطی در بخش نفت با تاکید بر نوسانات قیمت آن (مطالعه موردی اقتصاد ایران)

Crude oil accounts for the lion’s share of the demand for fossil fuels. Within the past few decades, increased oil consumption in a variety of economic sectors has lead to massive release of toxic pollutants and greenhouse gases, most specially Carbon Dioxide, as well as inflicting damages to the Earth like global warming and climate change. Accordingly, it is imperative to explore the relation...

Environmental Kuznets Curve: new evidences based on a dynamic panel threshold model

This paper examines the non-linear relationship between CO2 emissions and economic development using an innovative dynamic panel threshold technique. The sample consists of 35 developed countries over the period 2003-2010. The empirical results indicate that there is a threshold effect in the relationship between economic growth and pollutant emissions as suggested by the environmental Kuznets ...

Evaluating the effects of energy and economic growth on Carbon dioxide emission (using spatial panel data)

Energy is one of the most important inputs in production. Energy usage and energy diffusion of fossil fuels in process of production cause greenhouse gases (CO2) emission and destruction of environment. According to the importance of issues like energy usage and economic growth, this paper, concerning the effects of proximity, evaluates the effects of energy usage and economic growth on emissio...

Testing for Environmental Kuznets Curve in the EU Agricultural Sector through an Eco-(in)Efficiency Index

Studies on agricultural production practices advance within international literature and new methods are proposed in order to assess the agricultural sustainability, either at farm or macro level. The present paper builds on these advancements and develops a synthetic Eco-(in)efficiency index by employing a directional distance function—data envelopment analysis (DEA) model. This index is used ...

Emissions Trends and Labour Productivity Dynamics Sector Analyses of De-coupling/recoupling on a 1990-2005 Namea

This paper provides new empirical evidence on Environmental Kuznets Curves (EKC) for greenhouse gases (GHGs) and air pollutants at sector level. A panel dataset based on the Italian NAMEA over 1990-2005 is analysed, focusing on both emission efficiency (EKC model) and total emissions (IPAT model). Results show that looking at sector evidence, both decoupling and also eventually re-coupling tren...
